The Sydney Fish Market is a $850 million state-led infrastructure and mixed-use development at Blackwattle Bay, delivered by Infrastructure NSW as the first major project within the Blackwattle Bay urban renewal precinct. Designed by 3XN in collaboration with BVN and Aspect Studios and constructed by Multiplex, the project replaces the existing market with a purpose-built facility combining wholesale seafood operations, retail, hospitality and public domain.
The development increases the site footprint by approximately 20% and accommodates more than 40 operators across seafood retail, food services and dining. It delivers over 6,000 sqm of publicly accessible open space, including a continuous harbour-edge promenade forming part of the 15km Sydney Harbour foreshore walk between Woolloomooloo and Rozelle Bay. The facility is designed to support more than six million visitors annually while maintaining full daily market operations.
A key architectural and engineering feature is the 200-metre-long floating roof structure, constructed from more than 600 glue-laminated timber beams and incorporating solar generation and rainwater harvesting. The market retains full wholesale, auction and marine servicing functions, including dedicated wharves, industrial-scale back-of-house infrastructure and public viewing areas. The project opened to the public in January 2026.
